Following the previous episode’s thrilling port fight between the surviving Survey Corps members and the Yeagerists, the series goes back in time to Eren and his crew’s first visit to Marley.

The undercover Eldians enter enemy territory with good intentions. Hange Zoe looks to form an alliance with the Subjects of Ymir Protection Group, which will give a speech the next day.

The group soon finds out about Marley’s witch hunt for Subjects of Ymir when Levi catches a young refugee named Ramzi with Sasha’s purse. As the Marleyan crowd gang up on the child, Levi plays it off as if Ramzi is Sasha’s sibling, giving enough time for the entire group to leave the scene.

Levi and the squad visit the home of Azumabito, where she further explains that Marley has been cracking down on Subjects of Ymir who escaped internment camps. This realization chips away at their hopes of establishing peace, but Hange is still optimistic about the Protection Group.

The group then attends the forum the next day, only to be let down by the organization’s agenda. Rather than seek peace amongst all Eldian members, the speaker seeks aid for the refugee Subjects of Ymir and further condemns the “island devils” as their true enemy.

Seeing the hatred of Eldians firsthand, Eren leaves the group to set up the surprise attack in Liberio.

What did Mikasa say to Eren before the party?

During their time at Azumabito’s home, Mikasa notices that Eren is missing and finds him near Ramzi’s community. The Eldian leader is empathetic to the displaced people, relating it to their own situation when the titans first attacked.

With the two now alone, Eren questions why Mikasa cares so much about him. She is taken aback by the question and frantically replies that Eren is “family”. While they are not blood-related, Eren saved Mikasa when they were kids and she has since lived with the Yeager family.

The moment of truth is then interrupted by one of Ramzi’s elders inviting them to a party. The rest of the team arrives and joins the celebration, eating and drinking to their hearts’ content. Captain Levi eventually finds all of them passed out in one of the tents, also spotting Mikasa sleeping next to Eren.

Later in the episode, the two contemplate their complex relationship separately. On Eren’s side, Zeke teases the idea that Mikasa might actually like him enough “to rip apart titans” for him.

As for Mikasa, she wonders if things would’ve ended up differently if she gave another answer to Eren’s question.

What are Eren’s reasons for the Rumbling?

The episode also reveals more details about Eren’s plans and motivations during conversations with allies Floch and Historia.

Despite joining forces with Yelena and Zeke Yeager for the Eldian euthanasia plan, he makes it clear to Floch that he is just playing along to find the perfect opportunity to attack Marley. Within the story, Eren ditches Zeke’s plan once he gets access to the Coordinate, the universal channel that connects all titans and Subjects of Ymir together.

Historia tries to fight against Eren’s destructive plans by addressing the possibility of killing innocent people like his mother. However, Eren is unfazed by the comment and believes that his all-out attack will end the cycle of revenge between the world and the Eldians.

On a more personal note, he sees the Rumbling as the only way to ensure his friends are able to “live and be happy”.

Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 will start airing on March 4.
