The original Black Butler anime produced by A-1 Pictures debuted in 2008 with a total of 24 episodes. The second season, titled Black Butler 2, continued its main storyline in 2010 for a total of 12 episodes.

10 episodes animated the Book of Circus arc in 2014, which currently holds a high 8.07 score on MyAnimeList at the time of writing. It was followed by the OVAs Book of Murder in 2015 and Book of the Atlantic in 2017.

The manga, illustrated and written by Toboso, has been ongoing since 2006, published in Square Enix’s shinen manga magazine Monthly GFantasy with 32 volumes at the time of writing, and is way ahead of its animated series.

Black Butler is set in Victorian-era England and follows protagonist Ciel Phantomhive. After his parents’ tragic death, Ciel forms a contract with a demon, whom he named Sebastian Michaelis, in exchange for his soul with the goal of getting revenge on his parents’ murderers.

Sebastian disguises himself as the Phantomhive family’s butler, a loyal servant who possesses extraordinary supernatural demonic powers.

The story combines mystery, supernatural, comedy, and drama, exploring themes of loyalty, morality, and humanity.
