Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End became extremely popular during its first season. The 28-episode run started last Fall and rose through the ranks since then due to its slower, more heartfelt take on the action fantasy genre.

And now that the season’s done, many are left wondering when the story will get its next chapter with a Frieren Season 2.

Animating a show takes a long time. While this is especially true for anime (some shows take up to three years per season), here’s why we think Frieren will have a second season!

5 reasons we think Frieren Season 2 will happen

The major antagonist hasn’t been introduced yet

There’s still much to be explored in Frieren’s source material, including the big bad of the current timeline.

While the first season mainly focused on character development (and more Himmel flashbacks than we can count), there hasn’t been any hints about the next villain yet.

And with the tournament arc over and done with, it’d be a waste to flesh out the world’s strongest mages without introducing a real antagonist.

The first season got extremely high ratings in Japan

Ratings on the best anime episodes in a given week can be especially competitive in Japan. This is also true for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

But in spite of the odds, the Shonen fantasy show became the 4th highest-rated anime show in the country when its 12th episode aired.

One Piece and SpyxFamily were just some of the shows that landed below Frieren’s ‘Average Household Ratings’. The MADHOUSE production even outranked Doraemon during the same week.

Stark is set up to be a major character in Frieren Season 2

The second half of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End concluded the “First-Class Mage Exam” arc, which focused on the magical side of things. And while it gave way to a lot of explosive moments involving the show’s most powerful mages, a lovable character was majorly side-lined

Stark’s tenacity as a warrior hasn’t been fully explored since his fight with the red dragon in the show’s fifth episode.

And what was teased afterwards proves that the red-haired warrior is meant to play a significant role in the fight to come. His entire story arc feels like a set-up to a much larger event, which is why we think that a second season is inevitable.

Frieren Season 2 wouldn’t be the first MADHOUSE follow-up

Frieren’s animation studio is famed for producing some of the best anime of all time. Though most of their work ends on the first season, some of these adaptations have gotten second seasons.

MADHOUSE shows like Overlord and One Punch Man have stepped into the spotlight in recent years. Both shows got super famous, and both have gotten second seasons.

But while this bodes well for a ‘Frieren season 2’, the quality of animation often gets a downgrade due to budget cuts and changing animation teams. Thankfully, this hasn’t always been the case, and we hope it won’t be if there’s new Frieran to come.

The production committee increases odds of good new Frieren content

Frieren’s anime adaptation pushed the boundaries of anime, a feat typically seen at the springboard of long-running anime series.

And while we’ve seen less-than-stellar follow-ups in the past, shows that have been handled by TOHO Animation have a track record for getting proper sequels.

SpyxFamily, My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen have all had their second seasons managed by TOHO Animation.

And considering the show’s breakout success, expect similar treatment once Frieren season 2 gets announced down the line and we get some new Frieran to enjoy.
