The highlight Week 7 match of China’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL) saw a clash between repeat MSI 2022 winners Royal Never Give Up and reigning 2021 World Champions Edward Gaming.

Just last week, EDG took a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to league leaders Top Esports after Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang’s Wukong stole Baron from under their noses in the late game.

This series, RNG snowballed an early lead from bot lane after a miscommunication blunder from EDG, ending the lopsided game one 24 kills to 6 in 26 minutes. In game two, EDG jungler Zhao “Jiejie” Li-Jie took the helm, ganking bot lane for an early double kill. Working with Lee “Scout” Ye-chana’s Taliyah, they controlled team fights around objectives, secured all dragons, Soul, and eventually the game to tie it out.

Game three pushed the limits of both teams, which saw Royal Never Give Up trailing from the start and playing from behind, but eventually clawing their way back to victory with just a bit of luck.

Baron steal from Breathe, Royal Never Give Up’s top laner, stuns Edward Gaming in deciding game three

Edward Gaming took a risk in game three, picking Draven for Park “Viper” Do-hyeon even though every other scaling AD carries were all available. Alongside AP carry Sylas, they intended to close things out quickly with this draft that centered around Draven’s “win lane, win game” win condition.

Snowballing from the get-go, EDG were in full control, leading in kills–17 to four–by the 33 minute mark. They also had three Cloud Drakes and a sizeable 10,000 gold lead over their opponents. Within the next three minutes, they secured Cloud Soul and were knocking on RNG’s base.

A clutch Seismic Shove from Li “Xiaohu” Yuan-Hao’s Taliyah caught out Tian “Meiko” Ye’s Leona, which quickly turned the fight into a 4v5. Li “Flandre” Xuan-Jun tried to make a play in Mega Gnar form, but overstepped a bit too far and perished as well. RNG successfully stalled the game, and were more than happy for Chen “GALA” Wei’s Aphelios and Chen “Breathe” Chen’s Gangplank to keep scaling.

At the second Baron spawn, EDG used their positional advantage, cleared all the vision in the pit, and started the objective. Unable to reach in time, all RNG could do at this point in time was put down Farsight Alteration to gain vision of Baron.

At 1,000 HP, Breathe tried his luck, casting Gangplank’s large AoE ultimate, Cannon Barrage, which covered the entire pit. At the same time, instead of waiting for Baron to drop to 900 HP, JieJie used Smite a tad too early, and as a result, gave over Baron buff to RNG.

The two teams clashed again at the Elder Dragon a few seconds after, but by then, GALA and Breathe had full builds, and conveniently out-damaged EDG’s lineup. With double buffs, Royal Never Give Up lived up to their name once again, and ran down mid for the 2-1 series win.
