The League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) wraps up its quarterfinals with a do-or-die match between LEC’s G2 Esports and LCK’s Gen.G.

While many saw Gen.G as a top Korean contender with Worlds veterans like Kim “Clid” Tae-min and Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk in their roster, the team was not able to put their guard up against Europe’s #1 superteam. Despite it being a best-of-five, G2 easily swept the series and continues their legacy as the kryptonite of the LCK.

Game one

G2 Esports cleverly drafted for a global composition in game one, picking up the likes of Twisted Fate, Jhin, and Pantheon. While Gen.G was playing their usual slower-paced game to farm their carries, G2 was on the offense with some jungle ambushes. By the 21-minute mark, G2 pulled off an incredible Curtain Call/Grand Starfall combo to pinch Gen.G in the jungle.

While Gen.G was still trying to acquire the dragon soul, G2 did their best to block them from completing the map objective. As Gen.G initiated a clash with Kim “Life” Jeong-min’s Taric and his ultimate, G2 immediately dogpiled the support before his invulnerability came in. Even though half of G2 went to sleep from Kim “Clid” Tae-min’s Lillia, they claimed the ace with Martin “Wunder” Hansen’s Camille teleporting for the flank.

Gen.G was already chipping away at G2’s gold-lead with farming and map objectives, but the team made a risky decision to go for the Baron. With G2 coming up for the ambush, Gen.G came prepared and countered the attack with a kill on Perkz. Even being one man down, Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle and Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski ripped through the entire Gen.G team, getting their second ace and their first Nexus of the series.

Game two

With G2’s draft being quite successful, Gen.G tried to outdraft G2 by building the same team composition, only replacing the bot-lane with a stun-heavy duo of Leona and Ashe.

Luckily for G2, they stayed true and commited to a similar global draft with Jhin, Tahm Kench, and Shen. Even though Gen.G was adamant about initiating fights in the jungle, Rasmus “Caps” Winther’s Sylas was an AP-heavy killer that could turn fights around with one stolen ultimate.

In the final fight of game two, Life’s Leona did his best to stun Perkz out of the fight, but it led to a lengthy overextension that that was punished by Caps’ Sylas. Even with a pinpoint spear by Clid’s Nidalee, Caps went golden and retaliated with a stolen Ashe ult. With the rest of G2 following up in the fight, Caps dove into the base to get the triple-kill ace on Ruler and secure their game two win.

Game three

By the third game, Caps stayed on the deadly Sylas while Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong still believed that his Twisted Fate could turn the tides for them.

Even though the game was still even by the fifteenth minute, Gen.G found themselves stuck in a mid-lane clash. While Life’s Tahm Kench was able to save Bdd’s TF with a Devour, Clid’s Kindred entered the fight a bit too late and had to pop Lamb’s Respite to keep himself alive. While Rascal and Bdd came in to save their jungler, Wunder’s Renekton teleported in for a deadly slice-and-dice that deleted their back-line.

Even though G2 was already knocking down the Nexus towers of Gen.G, the Korean team immediately went for the miraculous reengage. Wunder tried to slice-and-dice his way to the main carries, but Ruler quickly took him down with a few skill shots. Bdd and Rascal managed to chase down one more kill with Perkz to keep themselves in the game.

While Gen.G managed to fight back in the late-game, a poorly-initiated clash was all that G2 needed to win. With Rascal trying for the flank with no back-up, G2 instantly deleted the top-laner while Caps kept the rest of the team around with a stolen Lamb’s Respite. With the 4v5 advantage, G2 pursued the remaining members for the ace and closed out the series in a sweeping fashion.

With the quarterfinals win, G2 Esports advances into the semifinals, facing off DAMWON Gaming on October 24, 6 p.m. (GMT+8).
