DAMWON Gaming is the first team to advance to the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) Semifinals after a convincing 3-0 win over DRX.

The team has been building momentum all year after winning their first LCK title in the Summer Split, and then finishing as Group B’s top seed in the Worlds Groups stage.

Coach Lee “Zefa” Jae-min is now looking forward to facing either LEC champions G2 Esports, or fellow LCK team, Gen.G in the semifinals.

“Since the loser gets side-selection, we didn’t really expect a 3-0 win, but we got an easy victory,” said Zefa. “For the semifinals, both teams can create a really interesting story for us.”

Coach Zefa is referring to the fact that if DAMWON faces Gen.G, it will guarantee an LCK team making the Final for the first time since 2017. Meanwhile, if the team faces G2 Esports, they’ll have a chance to get their revenge for Worlds 2019, where they were eliminated by G2 in the Quarterfinals.

When talking about the team’s biggest assets, the players considered their consistent shot-calling and communication as a winning factor. While the team already consists of talented individuals, DWG’s members never shy away from giving all the information they can to improve their chances of outplaying their opponents.

“I think we all five make shot-calls and maybe BeryL is the one that makes the most shot-calls as support,” said star midlaner, Heo “ShowMaker” Su.

Coach Zefa reaffirmed this when discussing the team’s strengths, stating that their versatility is what separates them from other teams.

“I think our players are very versatile and talented so they are always able to maneuver different picks and styles if they can practice it and get used to it in a very short period of time,” said Zefa. “I’m always trying to teach them how to make them think about the picks and playstyles they can do in any given situation.”

For ShowMaker, while he’s consistently named alongside Top Esports’ Zhuo “Knight” Ding and DRX’s Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon as one of the best mid-laners in the world, he’s still humble in receiving praise and wants to prove himself by winning Worlds.

“I don’t know yet, but I believe that the mid-laner of the World Championship will be the best mid-laner so I think winning Worlds is the important task at hand,” said ShowMaker.

With DAMWON coming into the final stages as a fan favorite, assistant coach, Yang “Daeny” Dae-in, shared that he does his best to inspire the team through heartfelt and meaningful talks. Instead of being obnoxiously certain that they’ll win the Summoner’s Cup, Daeny wants the players to search within their own efforts and thoughts to come out strong.

“I always tell them to compare yourself to your yesterday, not to other players on different teams,” answered Daeny. “With this kind of mindset paired with their best performances, I think we’ll be in a very solid form.”

DAMWON Gaming will face the winner of G2 Esports vs. Gen.G on October 25, 6 p.m. (GMT+8).
