VATS, aka Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, is a game mechanic in Fallout games, also present in Fallout 76.

It allows players to auto-target enemies, attack particular limbs, check weaknesses and other such things to help them take out enemies in any combat.

In Fallout 76, activating VATS is a breeze. On your PC, simply press the ‘Q’ button. On the PlayStation, it’s as easy as pressing ‘L1’, and on the Xbox, just hit ‘LB’. This can be done whenever you’re near an enemy, making it a quick and efficient way to engage.

Doing so will enter the VATS mode, where you can press the following buttons for different actions:

  • Enter Critical mode
    • PC: Press Spacebar
    • Xbox: Press the Y button
    • PlayStation: Press ▲ button
  • Change parts
    • PC: Use the mouse scroll wheel
    • Xbox: Analog stick 
    • PlayStation: Analog stick 
  • Switch enemies
    • PC: Z/C keys 
    • Xbox: D-pad
    • PlayStation: D-pad
  • Exit VATS mode
    • PC: Press the Tab key
    • Xbox: Press the B button
    • PlayStation: Press the ○ button

Now that you know how to use VATS in Fallout 76, there are two perks that we recommend having equipped. These are:

  • Concentrated Fire: It allows you to target limbs, using focus fire to get high accuracy and damage per shot. 
  • Awareness: This perk allows you to see the enemy’s specific damage resistance in VATS mode.
