100 Thieves is about to become something a lot more than just an esports organization. The Los Angeles-based organization is making a video game, and it’s going to be developed with input from 100 Thieves pros, content creators, and the community.
Project X is still in the very early stages of development and hiring. Pete Hawley, the organization’s new Chief Product Officer, will be spearheading the entire process.
Hawley has nearly 30 years of experience in game development, having worked at Electronic Arts, Zynga, and Mythical Games.
100 Thieves’ Project X may be a shooter
The team appears undecided about what type of game it will be, but Nadeshot did provide a few clues in their announcement video.
“I’ve fallen in love with Valorant and it just reminded me so much of when I was a kid who was just obsessed with Halo 2, Gears of War, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” Nadeshot said.
“I just want to create moments and experiences that can make you feel the same way that I did when I was a kid.”
And given Nadeshot’s background in competitive Call of Duty, it appears likely that the upcoming game will be some sort of shooter.
Project X was borne from a debate between Nadeshot and Robinson over whether Halo 2 or Halo 3 was the better game. Robinson was intrigued by their differing perspectives – Nadeshot preferred Halo 2 because of the better net code, while Robinson liked the maps and matchmaking on Halo 3 – and opinions on what makes a good game.
This led the pair to the realization that 100 Thieves was home to several creators that would prove invaluable in creating a game that players would get excited about.
Streamers like Jack “CouRage” Dunlop and Rachell “Valkyrae” Hofstetter are constantly looking for new games to play and they “always have feedback on what they’re playing and how that game can be made better,” said Robinson.
100 Thieves will have its work cut out for it. Robinson acknowledged that “making games is really, really hard and really, really challenging,” but by listening to the pros, creators, and community, he thinks they have a good chance of succeeding.
More updates will be coming soon, according to Nadeshot, but don’t expect a release date any time in the near future.
