Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite systems have sold more than 15 million units in the North American market, according to data released by the Japanese video game industry leader.

Sales of Nintendo’s Switch systems — boosted by the introduction of the portable Switch Lite — increased by more than 20% year-to-date through September. The original Switch has also been the United States’ top-selling console for 10 consecutive months, according to market research firm The NPD Group.

The Switch’s innovative portable/console hybrid design turned heads when it was first revealed to video game fans around the world. But more than just being a novelty, it lived up to the hype when it was officially released in March 2017. Since then, it has become Nintendo’s flagship video game system over the last three years.

Behind the success of the gaming systems is a similarly successful selection of titles. 14 Nintendo titles created for the Switch have sold more than one million copies in the US market. Four of them — Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — have each sold more than six million units.

Hot titles from partner developers and publishers have also helped boost the console’s popularity. Prominent examples include Minecraft from Mojang AB, Fortnite from Epic Games, and even indie favorites Cuphead from Studio MDHR and the Untitled Goose Game from House House.

The US and North America sales figures are only a slice of a bigger pie. In July, Nintendo also announced that global sales figures for the Nintendo Switch have exceeded the 36 million mark. With numbers like these, sales of the Nintendo Switch for its first three years mirrors the growth trajectory demonstrated by Sony’s PlayStation 4.

With the holidays coming up, Nintendo expects sales of Switch systems to continue rising toward the end of 2019.
