The second week of the League of Legends Champions Korea showcased an incredible reverse-sweep by DRX with the use of a forgotten champion.

Despite going through an extensive roster rebuild, DRX’s current line-up works around their veteran jungler, Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon. As one of the seniors of the team, he’s able to lead the experimentation of the team’s compositions.

In their latest match against Nongshim RedForce, the DRX jungler pulled out an off-meta pick with Udyr, a champion last seen in the LCK in 2016. Furthermore, the last win on Udyr was in 2015 LCK Spring by former SKT T1 player Im “Tom” Jae-hyeon.

Some might say that the Udyr was a counter-intuitive pick with better options like Lee Sin or Kayn, but Pyosik proved his mastery of the Spirit Walker and led his team to victory.

Pyosik utilized Udyr more as a chase-down champion that paired well alongside Son “Becca” Min-woo’s Rakan. With a lot of crowd control to put out, Udyr can easily rush in and deliver the Bear Stance stun while Jeong “BAO” Hyeon-woo dished out the damage with his Kai’Sa.

One thing to note about Pyosik’s Udyr is his insane movement speed. The DRX jungler’s itemization and runes perfectly complemented his chase-down playstyle.

Turbo Chemtank’s added ability haste and Supercharged skill and Dead Man’s Plate’s Shipwrecker increased his movement significantly when entering fights. Paired with Phase Rush and Udyr’s passive of Monkey Agility, you can clearly see that Pyosik could quickly move in and out of possible skirmishes.

Pyosik managed to grab the game two MVP as a great supporting character to the actual carries of his team. With the run-and-stun technique, Pyosik focused on immobilizing clinical playmakers like Park “Bay” Jun-byeong’s Syndra for the instant 4v5 advantage.

Though the unorthodox pick seemed flawless for DRX, the final moments of game two exposed Udyr’s one and only weakness: walls.

As for the series, DRX laid off the pick in the third game for Olaf and managed to reverse-sweep Nongshim RedForce. While the speedy Spirit Walker’s playtime was short-lived, Pyosik has already stated that Udyr is an easy champion to play and that he might make an appearance every now and then.

DRX will go on to face Liiv SANDBOX tomorrow (January 22) at 7 p.m. GMT+8.
