Even though Cloud9 lost the tiebreaker against DetonatioN FocusMe, they bounced back in the best-of-five Play-In Stage qualification series, sweeping OCE representatives PEACE 3-0.
Cloud9 head coach Alfonso “Mithy” Aguirre Rodríguez joined Laure Valée on the broadcast for an interview after their well-earned victory to reflect on their journey at Worlds 2021 so far.
C9 Mithy on the Worlds 2021 format, and how the meta might evolve in the Group Stage
Laure Valée opened by asking coach Mithy how the team managed to get a mental reset and achieve victory in the knockout stage.
“Best-of-one is just a horrible system… if you have a bad day, you just lose,” said Mithy. “We had a good two days. Since the teams we played against are at a similar skill level to ours, maybe we were the better team on that day.”
This is not the first time Mithy expressed his thoughts on Riot Games’ long standing best-of-one format used in Play-Ins and the Group Stage. At the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, he was also critical, and had stated that best-of-ones “don’t represent League of Legends as a whole”.
As Cloud9 heads into the Worlds 2021 Group Stage, they’ll be going up against DWG KIA, FunPlus Phoenix, and Rogue in Group A.
When asked about the evolving Worlds 2021 meta, coach Mithy replied, “There’s definitely going to be a lot more diversity in the Group Stage because all of these teams don’t really scrim the Play-In teams, they scrim each other, so they have their own thing going on there too.”
