Fans of one of the biggest anime franchises, Jujutsu Kaisen, may be surprised to find out that Domain Expansion already exists in Riot Games’ first person shooter (FPS), Valorant.

Since Jujutsu Kaisen’s official mobile game “Phantom Parade” is still under development, this may be a good time for anime fans to download Valorant and play its toxic agent Viper to practice their Domain Expansion skills before the game’s release.

Domain Expansion in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime

In Gege Akutami’s fictional world, Domain Expansion is a flamboyant finishing move that’s used by sorcerers and high grade curses.

Just like how characters in Bleach use reiatsu (spiritual force) to empower moves, cast spells, and show off techniques on the battlefield, JJK characters manipulate cursed energy.

Domain Expansion is literally an expansion of one’s domain, and requires a lot of cursed energy to fuel. It traps the user and their opponents in a spherical barrier that is unique to one’s cursed technique.

Inside, the user gains the upper hand, for all their techniques are empowered, plus all their attacks are guaranteed to hit.

Viper’s Pit is basically Domain Expansion in Valorant

In Valorant, controller agent Viper is equipped an ultimate called Viper’s Pit. When cast, she envelops a significant area of the map with green, poisonous fumes.

Just like Domain Expansion, Viper possesses an enormous tactical advantage when inside her smoke screen. All enemy agents who enter it have limited vision, and the longer they stay in her ultimate, the more their health points drop all the way to one.

For Viper, enemies are also made more visibly prominent to her, as they are outlined in red. As such, one hit is all Viper needs when she’s standing within her ultimate.

In the upper bracket semifinals of the ongoing VCT NA Stage 3 Challengers Playoffs, Sentinels were up against Team Envy. Playing defense on Icebox, Envy’s Jimmy “Marved” Nguyen on Viper casted his ultimate, which was described as a “Domain Expansion” by caster Gustavo “Upmind” Franco Domingues.

The reference was well received by Valorant fans watching the Twitch stream, who started commenting “DOMAIN EXPANSION” and “Ryoiki Tenkai”, the Japanese translation of the phrase, and appreciated the anime reference.
