With Bethesda’s next big title, Starfield, set to launch in just a few weeks on September 6, many are wondering if Starfield multiplayer is going to be a thing.

The highly-anticipated title did receive an update regarding preloads today, and fans are now more excited than ever to jump into Bethesda’s next huge title.

To answer the important question, it’s a bit complicated.

Has Bethesda created the game with Starfield multiplayer as a component? No, they have confirmed that they have no plans to have multiplayer.

However, the modding community will certainly have a different plan. There’s almost no doubt that a multiplayer mode will be created via a mod that players will be able to download. It would be unwise to expect multiplayer to be available via a mod within the first few weeks or months at the latest.

This is exactly how many features, including multiplayer, have made their way into other Bethesda titles such as Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

In terms of why Starfield multiplayer isn’t something they chose to take on themselves, the game’s director Todd Howard had the following to say:

“You really have to beta test these things for a long period of time, 24/7, with live players. So they are a different animal than a regular singleplayer game that we would do,” he explained.

However, he didn’t rule out other games being open to it in the future.

“Obviously the stuff we have coming — Starfield, Elder Scrolls VI — are single-player games, but I wouldn’t rule it out in the future,” he said.

So long story short, yes, the game will probably have a version of multiplayer, but no, it won’t be a direct feature of the game itself from Bethesda.
