Kobeni Higashiyama is a supporting character in Chainsaw Man, a horror-comedy manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The series is set in a world where devils manifest from human fears.

The young devil hunter enters the story as part of Aki‘s squad, alongside Himeno and Hirokazu, saving Denji and Power from the Leech Devil.

Makima then assigns Kobeni to the experimental squad which consists of the rescue quartet and the two delinquents. Kobeni has reservations about Denji and Power because they’re devils, but Aki reassures her by saying that they’ll behave.

The squad goes on a mission to find the Gun Devil by using bullets that are attracted to the devil and its arsenal. Aki carries around a bullet on a chain which leads the team to an abandoned hotel, Hotel Morin.

As they patrol the halls, a walking head tries to attack Kobeni, which makes her quiver in fear. Power and Himeno take out the threat, calming the young devil hunter down. Himeno explains that the head stopped in mid-air with the power of her Ghost Devil.

Power tests Himeno by threatening Kobeni with a blood spike. Himeno immediately retaliates by choking Power with a ghost arm.

Members of the group soon run into each other at the staircase. As they try to find out what’s happening, Himeno tells Kobeni to stand still and make peace signs so she can check if they’re actually stuck on the hotel’s eighth floor.

Things start to spiral for the young recruit. She panics inside a room and believes that they’ll starve to death. Himeno tries to calm her down by telling her that fear is a devil’s favorite food, but she eventually has to knock Kobeni out after she attempts to drink from a toilet bowl.

The group soon encounters the ominous threat presiding in the hotel, the Eternity Devil. They propose making a contract with it in exchange for their release, but during negotiations, Kobeni walks out with a knife and demands that Denji offers himself as the devil’s fodder.

Aki and Himeno immediately disarm Kobeni to keep everyone safe. Kobeni’s paranoia soon gets to her, blaming Power for the situation and Hirokazu for sympathizing with their devil teammates.

Kobeni further pushes the idea of Denji getting eaten and he surprisingly agrees since his plan is to fight the Eternity Devil. After a three-day battle, Denji emerges victorious and the exhausted squad finally leaves Hotel Morin.

The group gets together for a newbie welcome party, which consists of other devil hunters from the Public Safety department. Kobeni mentions that she’s 20 years old and that she’s contracted to a devil whose identity she keeps a secret.

Personality and powers of Kobeni in Chainsaw Man

Kobeni is a timid devil hunter who’s considered the weakest link in the experimental squad. Whenever she has to deal with devils, she primarily looks at Himeno and Aki to bail her out.

She is often the butt of the joke for the squad’s antics. Himeno loves to tease her while Power typically shifts the blame to her whenever bad things happen. Hirokazu, her closest friend in the squad, tries to calm her down whenever she cracks under pressure.

While Kobeni did mention that she’s contracted to a devil at the newbie welcome party, the devil’s abilities have yet to be seen in the manga and series.

First appearance of Kobeni in Chainsaw Man

Kobeni Higashiyama appears in chapter 10 and episode four of the manga and anime respectively.
