“Hey ChatGPT, can you write the next chapter of the One Piece manga?”

Anime fans were stunned when One Piece creator and mangaka himself, Eiichiro Oda, submitted this question to ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot that rose to popularity in late 2022.

“Please write something really interesting,” the manga author added to his inquiry.

One Piece creator makes a request to chatbot ChatGPT to write the story for One Piece’s next manga chapter

The chatbot came up with two stories for the legendary manga artiste.

In the first pitch, the Straw Hat Pirates face off against new enemies called the “King of Shadows,” a very powerful devil fruit user who can manipulate shadows.

After getting close to the crew, he later kidnaps Tony Tony Chopper.

To rescue the crew’s doctor and defeat the king, Nico Robin reconnects with the “Shadow People,” a legendary race she once met in her adventures. The Straw Hat Pirates visit their island and convince them to join the fight to eventually beat the King of Shadows.

Unfortunately, this story was rejected by Oda who thought it was “boring.” ChatGPT then came up with a second idea for the One Piece manga.

The second pitch focuses on aliens that disguise themselves as humans. The aliens pull off an “Among Us”, blending with humans onboard a ship. They ask for the help of the captain and crew to track down an evil spaceship that destroyed their home planet.

While pursuing the spaceship, the group stumbles upon an island where an evil witch lives. This witch plans to steal the aliens’ “Star Fragment,” an object necessary for the restoration of their home planet.

The aliens, ship captain, and crew then all work together to defeat the witch. Eventually, the group locates the evil spaceship and rebuilds their planet.

Eiichiro Oda liked this story development a lot better, and wrote back to ChatGPT that he will “write it exactly like that.”

Oda is one of the most popular manga artistes in the world, with One Piece being his most prominent work. In 2022, the Japanese author received a certificate of recognition from Guinness World Records for publishing 500 million copies of the One Piece manga since its debut in 1997.

One Piece is one of the longest-running manga series of all time, with over 1,000 chapters and 104 individual volumes as of writing.
