Massive changes are coming to Riot Games titles, particularly for Legends of Runeterra and Riot Forge, their collaborative video game publisher.

Chief Executive Officer Dylan Jadeja announced the future of Legends of Runeterra in a press release, emphasizing the shift in a new direction for the digital collectible card game.

“We’re making changes to move the game toward sustainability,” he said. “We’ve been subsidizing the cost of development on LoR through our other games, but at this point, that’s just not a viable option. So, we’re reducing the size of the team and shifting our focus to the ‘Path of Champions’ PvE game mode.”

Fans can expect minimal to no update at all when it comes to other existing game modes in LoR.

Notably, Riot Games is also phasing out Riot Forge, the publisher behind latest title, Bandle Tale.

“While we’re proud of what we’ve created in this space, and we’re grateful for the Forge team and for our external partners who made these games happen, we don’t view (Riot Forge) as core to our strategy moving forward,” he said.

Riot Games to focus on League of Legends, Valorant, and more

The video game company continues to invest and put its efforts into its more popular games — League of Legends, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift.

Fans can expect events, modes, and long-term roadmaps for these games.

“Our strategy will more tightly integrate esports, music, and entertainment with our games,” said Dylan and Marc Merrill, President of Riot Games.

In early February, Riot is scheduled to hold a product-focused RiotNow to get deeper into their portfolio and to discuss some of their plans for players in 2024. 

The video game company is also hinting at more beta testing opportunities for players for its upcoming fighting game, Project L.

They also confirmed the release of Arcane season 2 later in November this year.

The shift in direction and employee layoffs were announced at the same time on January 23, with the reason geared “toward a more sustainable future” for Riot Games.

Riot is removing 530 roles globally, about 11% of their workforce, with the biggest impact to teams outside of core development. 

“I realize this is awful news to hear, and especially hard for those who will be leaving us,” Dylan said. “To all the Rioters who are being laid off, we are deeply sorry that it has come to this.”
