League of Legends is undergoing a significant change as Riot Games shifts from Summoner Names to Riot IDs. This transition means that players won’t be able to use Summoner Names in the near future.

Starting November 20, Riot Games will be offering one free name change to all players.

If you wish to buy an extra name change, you can do so on the Accounts page for a cost the equivalent of US$10 in in-game currency.

  1. Log in to your account using the Riot client.
  2. After signing in, find and click the profile icon located in the upper right corner of the client.
  3. Look for “Account Details” and click on it. This will open a new tab in your web browser and may prompt you to log in once more.
  4. In this new tab, you’ll see a section labeled “Riot ID.” Within that section, you’ll find your game name and your tagline.
  5. Edit your Riot ID to your preferred name, and when you’re satisfied, click “Save Changes.”

Why is Riot Games phasing out Summoner Names in League of Legends?

Riot Games is phasing out the usage of Summoner Names and moving all players exclusively to Riot IDs “to create a more unified experience” according to an official statement by the Riot staff.

Over time, the story of Runeterra, League of Legends, and Summoner’s Rift has evolved. Initially, players acted as Summoners who brought the first set of Champions to the Rift.

However, this concept became limiting for the world and its characters. In 2014, the focus shifted to the Champions themselves rather than the all-powerful Summoners.

Although you may still hear the term “Summoner” in a few places like occasional voice lines, references, and notably in the name of the Rift, it no longer fits with the lore, especially when it comes to players’ Summoner Names. This update aims to align better with the current world of League of Legends, create a smoother experience across all of Riot’s games, and simplify the technical aspects of how names function.
