The sequel to Blizzard’s first person shooter is coming real soon.

Overwatch 2 will include a new PvE story mode, new maps, new heroes, and a graphical update featuring a new art style and look for every hero in the game.

The biggest update, however, is a new story mode that will expand on the lore Overwatch has been building on for the past three years. The cinematic announcement trailer shows the reformed Overwatch team facing off against Null Sector — the evil robot army behind the latest Omnic crisis.

The PvE part of the game will let you explore this lore for yourself with story levels and hero missions. For the first time, players will also be able to level up and customize heroes with talent trees.

On the PvP side of things, Blizzard is adding a new “Push” map type, which will see teams battling over control of a giant robot that will help push one team’s payload to victory. This is the first new map type to be introduced since the game launched.

Overwatch 2 will also come with a brand-new visual art style, with all 31 of the existing heroes getting fresh new redesigns for the sequel. Blizzard has also confirmed that Echo, a robot featured in the Reunion cinematic, and Sojourn, a new Canadian hero will be the next two heroes to be added to the game.

Blizzard wants to “redefine the idea of a sequel”, said Overwatch lead designer Jeff Kaplan, promising “a shared multiplayer environment”. Players who only own the first game will still have access to all of Overwatch 2’s PvP modes, maps, and heroes. As such, it seems like only PvE content will be exclusive to Overwatch 2 players.

Additionally, all cosmetics unlocked in Overwatch will carry over to Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 does not have a release date yet, however we do know that it will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
