Epic Games has announced that Fortnite: Battle Royale will be headed to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and ported to Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021.
Fortnite on consoles will sport improved performance and visuals thanks to the more powerful hardware of next-gen consoles. A version of Fortnite will be built with the game’s current engine, Unreal Engine 4, to go with the launch of next-gen consoles before it will be ported to Unreal Engine 5.
Epic also clarified that Fortnite for next-gen consoles will be “the same Fortnite you know and love.”
“No, this is not a new version of Fortnite. It’s Fortnite optimized to take advantage of the new hardware and features on next-gen consoles,” Epic said in a blog post.
While Epic added that they will be sharing more details nearer to the launch of next-gen consoles, they also shared plans to support cross-progression across console generations and platforms.
This means that Fortnite players will have their account, progression, and items carry over to the game’s next-gen port.
In addition, Epic intends to support cross-play across all platforms, including current and next-generation consoles. Support for existing platforms will also continue even as Fortnite heads to next-gen consoles.
Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are planned for a holiday release later this year.
