The BBC is creating a five-part documentary series on esports, featuring Excel Esports and their journey in the 2020 League of Legends European Championship.

Excel Esports Co-founder Kieran Holmes-Darby shared his excitement on Twitter.

“So proud to finally announce that throughout @Excel’s @LEC Spring Split this year, @bbcthree went behind the scenes and captured all the hard work, highs, lows and drama that unfolded.”

Excel Esports finished 7th in the LEC 2020 Spring Season, missing the playoffs with seven wins and eleven losses.

The documentary will offer audiences a behind-the-scenes look at a professional esports team, including their journey through the league and the personal stories of the players themselves.

Titled Fight for First, the series will follow the team as they deal with adulthood, living in a gaming house away from their families, and the unique opportunities and challenges the esports and gaming industry offers. Simon Rawles will be directing, and the project is produced by James Corbin and Jo Smith for BBC Three.

The series will be narrated by British actor Cillian Murphy, known for portraying Tommy Shelby on the BBC series Peaky Blinders and as the Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.  The actor mentioned that his sons were integral to his participation in this project.

“My sons love gaming,” the actor shared. “When I showed them the trailer for this, they said I had to do it. Being involved in Fight For First has been a great experience and there is so much more to professional gaming than I ever thought. It has opened up a whole new world to me and this series provides a proper insight into a fascinating, global industry.”

Fight for First is scheduled for release early 2021 on BBC iPlayer.
