The Malaysian government has allocated RM20 million (~US$4.8 million) towards developing esports in the country.
The announcement was revealed during the Malaysia Budget 2020 tabling earlier today.
“We recognise the high growth potential that esports offers and believe more can be done. We want to see the national esports team grow and hope they will do well at the upcoming SEA Games in Manila,” said Malaysian Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng.
The budget for esports next year is twice this year’s allocation, which was around RM20 million (~US$2.5 million). The 2019 funding amount was matched by Razer, and was used to kickstart and drive the development of a national esports team. The goal was to assemble and train the team for the upcoming medal events at SEA Games 2019 as well as improve the overall esports scene in Malaysia.
More details will be revealed in the coming days.
