Malam penganugerahan The Game Awards 2020 akan segera dilakukan pada 10 Desember 2020. Akibat pandemi COVID-19, acara penghargaan untuk menghormati video game terbaik tahun 2020 ini tidak akan dibuka untuk penonton secara langsung seperti enam gelaran sebelumnya.

Sebagai gantinya, The Game Awards 2020 ini akan disiarkan secara virtual yang akan dipandu oleh penggagas dari acara ini, Geoff Keighley. Acara ini akan menggunakan tiga soundstage di Los Angeles, London, dan Tokyo.

Pada nomine untuk The Game Awards 2020 ini telah diumumkan pada 18 November 2020 berisikan game-game yang dirilis sebelum 20 November 2020. Nominasi ini disusun oleh panel juri yang beranggotakan lebih dari 95 media di seluruh dunia.

Pemenang dari setiap kategori di The Game Awards 2020 ini akan ditentukan oleh juri (90 persen) dan suara publik (10 persen), yang dilakukan melalui situs resmi dan di beberapa platform media sosial seperti Facebook dan Twitter.

Namun, hal ini tidak berlaku untuk kategori Most Anticipated Game, di mana pemenangnya akan ditentukan sepenuhnya berdasarkan suara dari publik melalui Facebook dan Twitter.

Dari daftar nomine untuk setiap kategori yang dihadirkan, ada beberapa yang cukup janggal. Salah satu contoh terbesarnya ada di kategori “Best Mobile Game” di mana PUBG Mobile yang begitu berkembang pesat dan digemari player di seluruh dunia, justru tidak mendapatkan tempat di dalamnya.
