Tencent’s patrotic PUBG Mobile clone, Game For Peace, has already made US$70 million in revenue after launching exclusively in China last month.
Game for Peace was created as an alternative to PUBG Mobile after Tencent failed to receive approval by the Chinese government to monetize the latter.
The China-approved version removes all blood and gore from the game, and adds nationalistic elements including a flyover by the Chinese Air Force at the start of every game.
Outside of China, PUBG Mobile pulled in US$76 million in the same period, bringing Tencent’s combined revenue for the two games up to a massive US$146 million in May, according to a report by Sensor Tower.
Combined together, both versions of PUBG Mobile make it by far the world’s top grossing mobile app in May on the App Store and Google Play store. Honor of Kings, which is also made by Tencent, came in second with US$125 million in revenue.
