In this week’s In Case You Missed It: Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi celebrated his 33rd birthday in style by winning Game Over 2019; Korean fighting games legend, Seonwoo “Infiltration” Lee, announced his intention to compete at Evo 2019; Nintendo unveils the lighter, cheaper, more portable Switch Lite; and Infamous, Mineski, and Na’vi secure their spots at the International 2019.
Tokido wins Game Over 2019
Hajime “Tokido” Taniguchi celebrated his 33rd birthday in style with a dominant performance at Game Over 2019 in the Dominican Republic.
In the winners quarterfinals, he took out local hero and crowd favorite, Caba, and then made quick work of fellow Japanese pros, Keita “Fuudo” Ai in the semifinals, and Ryo “Dogura” Nozaki in the winners finals to reach a grand finals matchup against Arman “Phenom” Hanjani.
Phenom’s Karin managed to take the first set 3-1, but Tokido on his signature Akuma adjusted in the second set and cruised to a 3-0 victory, ending the tournament with a beautiful crossup into a stylish Critical Art finish.
Infiltration will compete at Evo 2019
Korean fighting games legend, Seonwoo “Infiltration” Lee, has announced his intention to compete at Evo 2019.
Infiltration is a two-time Street Fighter Evo champ, but has not competed at a CPT event since Evo 2018 in August last year, following allegations of domestic violence against his ex-wife.
It is unclear what game Infiltration will be competing in as he is currently banned from the CPT until 2020, however, he has been seen streaming Samurai Shodown on Twitch.
Nintendo announces the Switch Lite
Nintendo has unveiled the Switch Lite, a smaller on-the-go version of its popular console.
The Switch Lite features a 5.5-inch touchscreen, and has a longer battery life than the original Switch, but lacks a kickstand, removable Joy-Cons, rumble features, and it can’t dock to a TV.
The Switch Lite will launch on September 20 for US$200 in three colors:
Yellow, gray, and turquoise.
Infamous, Mineski, and Natus Vincere qualify for the International 2019.
Infamous from South America, Mineski from South East Asia, and Natus Vincere from the CIS region have all booked their tickets to the International 2019 by winning their regional qualifier.
Filipino team, Mineski, was the first team to qualify, defeating South Korean Team Jinesbrus 3-2 in a nailbiting SEA grand finals.
In the South America grand finals, Peruvian squad, Infamous, took down Brazilian powerhouse team, Pain Gaming, 3-0.
Ukranian team, Natus Vincere, took down Russian team Winstrike in the CIS grand finals, with a convincing 3-0 victory. Natus Vincere were the winners of TI1, and runners up at both TI2 and TI3.
The three squads will be joining the twelve squads who have already qualified for TI9.
TI9 will be held in Shanghai in August.
