Fortnite: Battle Royale remains one of the most popular games in the world, as the preeminent battle royale game earned a whopping US$1.8 billion in revenue in 2019.

Fortnite’s earnings made it the top-grossing online video game last year, according to the latest report by Nielsen’s gaming market research unit, SuperData. The game notably beat out the likes of Candy Crush, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, FIFA 19, and Pokémon Go from the top spot.

That also makes it two straight years that Fortnite has topped SuperData’s list, as the game was also the highest-earning free-to-play game in 2018. However, Fortnite’s 2019 revenue is down 25% from its previous record of US$2.4 billion in 2018.

Fortnite developer, Epic Games, seems set to continue pushing forward with its flagship game. As is, Fortnite has already set multiple industry-wide benchmarks and a number of market firsts, keyed by features which have heavily influenced the battle royale and free-to-play spaces, namely:

  • Making the game accessible on all platforms — PC, mobile, and console
  • Introducing cross-play on multiple gaming platforms, including the Sony PlayStation 4
  • Weekly updates that are packed with changes, improvements, and patches to keep the game fresh
  • Major collaboration with various major pop-culture IPs, such as the Star Wars, John Wick, and Avengers movie franchises
  • Creating and managing global events in the virtual arena
  • Enabling easy in-game content creation for various branding campaigns and crossovers

After the highly-successful concluding event of the game’s first chapter, that was followed shortly by the release of Fortnite Chapter 2, Fortnite’s seems primed for more growth in 2020.
