Cloud9 just pulled off the biggest upset of the BTS Pro Series: Americas tournament by defeating Evil Geniuses on the seventh day of the round-robin group stage matches.

After EG earned a convincing first game win against Cloud9, they decided to go for an unconventional draft in the second game of the series. EG drafted an Ember Spirit, Earth Spirit, Storm Spirit, and a hard support Void Spirit for Tal “Fly” Aizik.

EG’s unorthodox draft worked well in the early stages of the game. With their mobile heroes, they were able to chase down Cloud9’s heroes and Andreas “Cr1t-” Nielsen caught the Dire team with well-timed Boulder Smash and Magnetize combo.

EG continued to win team fights with their coordinated initiation plays against Cloud9. Kanishka “BuLba” Sosale earned himself an Ultra Kill on his Bristleback after Cloud9 attempted to prolong the team fight. But Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao was able to escape with his Divine Rapier after using his Black King Bar to return to base.

However, with EnternaLEnVy’s Medusa adding a Satanic and Butterfly to his Divine Rapier item set, he was able to dish out enough damage to force EG to retreat. With EternaLEnVy’s Medusa so farmed, EG’s all Spirit draft lacked the physical damage to force Cloud9 out of their base.

Cloud9 then went on to win the next game of the series and completed the huge upset in the North American region of the BTS Pro Series. Cloud9 earned their first win of the group stage and now have a record of 1-4. Meanwhile, Evil Geniuses suffered their first loss of the group stage which gives them a 3-1 record.
